When can this technique be used?

Restoration of the hand grasp has been successful in people with quadriplegia caused by a C6 neurological level lesion. People with incomplete lesions may benefit as well but has to be verified on an individual basis.

There are some general precautions that should be observed when using functional electrical stimulation. Those relates to
implanted electronic devices, epilepsy, cardiovascular problems, pregnancy to mention the most common.

To be useful the muscles to activate must be innervated, that is the nerve is intact so the electrical stimulation will generate contraction of the muscle. The controlling muscle must have some grade of volitional control.
